MohunBaganClub.com wishes Sailen Manna a very happy birthday. One of the greatest footballers of the world, on of the best defenders India has ever produced, Captain of Mohun Bagan and India, was born on September 1, 1924. Here’s wishing the Padmasree, Mohun Bagan Ratna – a very happy birthday.

Salien Manna was a graduate from Surendranath College under Calcutta University. He started his career in 1940 with Howrah Union in the 2nd Division of Kolkata Football League. In the year 1942, he joined Mohun Bagan and he played in this club till his retirement in the year of 1960. He captained Mohun Bagan as well as Indian team. He was the best defender in his time among the others. He was known for his anticipation, covering and strong free-kick.

The Great Sailen Manna started his international career in the year 1948 at London Olympics. India won the Gold Medal in 1951 Asian Games under Manna’s captaincy. Also won the Quadranular Tournament for four times 1952 to 1956 consecutively.

Honours and Awards:

  • Included in the list of the 10 best Captains of the world by English FA in 1953.
  • Awarded Padmashree in 1971 by the Government of India.
  • Awarded the "Footballer of the Millennium" by All India Football Federation in 2000.
  • Awarded "Mohun Bagan Ratna" in 2001.
