Diwali Dhamaka at YBK: 3-0 for the Mariners

In absence of Barreto, it was late Chiddi-Muritala magic at Yuba Bharati Krirangan today as the Mariners registered another emphatic victory over Md. Sporting. 3 – 0 score line is a perfect Diwali gift for all the fans and supporters of Mohun Bagan and the team is celebrating 7th straight win in CFL during post puja campaign.

Pre-match discussions at the members’ gallery were revolving round Barreto, who was yet to recover from fever. It was a rare occasion when Barreto’s name was not included in the player’s list and that too against a heavy weight team like Md. Sporting, who has been playing well under the guidance of their new coach.

The opening half was a battle for the control of the mid-field. While the Mariners were trying to consolidate their midfield through Jayanta- Snehasis combo, Md. Sporting was trying to create opportunities utilizing their wings. And at occasions, the black and white brigade made a few successful moves and created pressure on Mariners’ defense. However, for the mariners, the defenders showed their resilience and did well to initiate sporadic attacks on opposition’s half but the mid-fielders couldn’t able to find their ace finishers at the attacking zones. As a result, Md. Sporting defenders could easily nullify the Mariners’ waves of attack and the frustration kept mounting both within and off the field for the mariners. In the process, couple of solo attempts from Chiddi, Muritala and Souvik couldn’t promise anything to the score card. On the other hand, the mariners had a close save as Kartik Kisku missed a sitter.

A much needed vocal dose were due for the Mariners during the lemon break and it seemed the dose from the coach was enough as the Mariners started off the second half in a different gear. They started to put more pressure on Md. Sporting defense. Coach Stanley opted for first replacement on 65th minute when he brought experienced striker Ashim Biswas in place of Souvik and went for 4-3-3 combination from 4-4-2. And this move paid him off as Chiddi found the net from Ashim’s through and made it 1-0 for the mariners.  And the Diwali started for the Mariners at Salt Lake from then on.
Once the flood gate opened, it was a smooth sailing and sheer dominance by the Mariners as they were hungry to increase the score line to nullify any eventually. And they succeeded on 82nd minute when Muritala’s powerful shot beat the opponent custodian and found the net (2 – 0).  That was not the end of the story as the Mariners kept on attacking even during the dying moments of the match and it was Chiddi who made another stunning finish to ensure an emphatic 3 – 0 victory for the Mariners.

What a perfect moment for all the Mohun Bagan fans to celebrate the festival of light!!

Another convincing win by the Mariners

Another CFL encounter, another day of dominance, another hat trick by ace striker, Muritala Ali and another 3 points earned. That could be a good way to summarize today’s match against Mohammedan AC as the Mariners won the match 3 -1.

Today was the fourth post-puja encounter for Mariners in Sahara CFL 2010 and the resilient Mariners displayed their sheer dominance to earn 3 valuable points beating Mohammedan AC 3 – 1 at their home ground. The deadly trio, ‘Berreto-Chidi-Muritala’, were in-charge right from the beginning of the match and it was Muritala’s day today as he found the net on 11th minute as he finished the movement spearheaded  by Snehasis and Barreto (1 – 0). However, the initial lead didn’t sustain long as Saheed of Mohammedan AC took the advantage of defensive lapse and stunned the stadium with an equalizer on 18th minute (1 – 1). Since the resumption of post puja vacation encounters, Mariners defense were unbeaten till 288 minutes but a rare mistake from Karan Atwal might prove to be costly for the team on this occasion.

The unexpected equalizer provided much needed spark to the Mariners and the midfielders led by Barreto and Snehasis started to dominate. The whole hearted effort showed the result within a few minutes as Muritala trapped Chidi’s pass on his chest and scored his second goal on 25th minute of the match (2 – 1). And after that it is long saga of one sided affairs by the Mohun Bagan’s attacking force against the Mohammedan AC’s defense. However the score line didn’t change till the lemon break.

The Mariners started the second half with a determined effort to increase the goal margin. Coach Stanley allowed Chiddi some breather by replacing him with Souvik. It was a matter of time for the Mariners to crease the lead as they took complete control of the midfield. However, Mohammedan defenders made the Mariners wait till 65th minute when Muritala completed his hat trick from a brilliant move of Barreto (3- 1).

The team seems to get consolidated as the CFL progresses. However, sudden defensive lapse, poor conversion rates of numerous half chances, improvement on dead ball situation would continue to be the areas where Coach Stanley and his colleagues need to emphasize before the forthcoming derby and iLeague.

Convincing win for Mariners

A 3-0 victory against Railway Football Club brought sweet 3 points in Sahara CFL for Mariners. Muritala Ali opened the score card in the first half while Edeh Chidi scored a couple of brilliant goals in the second half and ensured a convincing win in the 6th match for the team Mohun Bagan. The win takes the Mariners at the top segment of the standing with 13 points in 6 matches.

Bagan coach Stanley Rozario opted for the same XI like previous match against George. Right from the begining, Mariners created immense pressure to the Railway Football Club’s defence. In the 22nd minute Surabuddin, the under-19 member of the squad, missed an open net. However, in the 32nd minute Muritala Ali scored an easy goal from a rebound of RFC’s goalkeeper.  From a corner of Snehasis, Kingshuk’s header was cleared by goalkeeper of RFC within the goal in the six yards box but Muritala Ali was there to score from this move in a open net (1-0).

Immediately after taking the lead, couple of attacks were initiated by Mohun Bagan players but none of those could change the score sheet. In the 42nd minute Muritala Ali scored from Edeh Chidi’s cross but referee gave it offside. At the end of first half it was 1-0 in favour of Bagan.

In the second half Bagan started with a bang while a lot of attacks were initiated but many of those went in vain as Mohun Bagan players found themselves trapped in off-side position most of the occasions.

In the 60th minute of the match, a solo effort made by Dhanrahan from the left flank as he crossed the ball to Barreto and Barreto passed the ball to Edeh Chidi by a brilliant flick in right foot and Chidi made no mistake to put the ball into the net by his right toe (2-0). What a brilliant attack and team effort that has been !!

In the 64th minute Muritala Ali got bit physical and was shown yellow card. This time uncountable attacks from Snehasis in the left flank destroyed the defensive policy of Railway FC. We have to mention the name of Snehais Chakraborty for his attacking game and brilliant effort in the field for his team. In the 71st minute Stanley Rozario brought Ashim Biswas in the place of Muritala Ali and 79th minute Satish Kumar came in the place of Jose Barreto. Chidi scored his second and team’s third goal in the 80th minute by a brilliant volley (3-0).

In the 82nd minute Snehasis was replaced by academy boy young Souvick Chakraborty. After that severe attack was made by Mariners but didn’t increase their number of goal. However Bagan finished the match in happy mode by winning the match 3-0. Snehasis Chakraborty was declared Man of the Match.
