Mohun Bagan beat Peerless 2-0 in a practice match held in Mohun Bagan ground today. Barreto and Lalampuia scored the two goals for Mohun Bagan.

Mohun Bagan defeated Peerless Sc by 2-0 in a practice match at the club ground today. Puiya and Barreto were the scorers. The team composition was 4-4-2 in the first half. Sangram played under the bar with usual back line of Deepak, Manju, Odafe and Habibur. Lalkamal was playing in left half and Mama in right with Marcos and Lalramluaha in Central midfield. Barreto and Puiya played in the upfront. Apart from scoring two goals Mohun Bagan also created number of chances in the first half and played a very positive game.

In the second half almost all the players of reserve bench from Branco Crodozo to Kartick Kisku got the chance to be in the action. Kartick Kisku and Lalramluaha were combining well through out the second half. Mohun Bagan got one spot kick in the dying moments of the second half as Kartick Kisku was brought down inside the box after a brilliant one- two with Lalramluaha. However Branco Cardozo missed the spot kick sending the grounder way outside goalkeeper’s right post. Ishfaq Ahmed was also effective in the second half with his speedy runs down the flank.

Mohunbaganclub.com and the supporters are upset after losing 3 vital points and slipping to 2nd position. We lost to a team that failed to win against us in 9 consecutive matches – and remember the last time we lost – was when Bhaichung Bhutia’s goal was rejected. And guess what- Dinesh Nair was officating the match on 11th September 2007 – the last time Mohun Bagan went down to the city club.

In two occasions Nair made Bagan play 10-men, though Bagan won both the matches. In the last match – Nair booked Bhaichung Bhutia for he was tackled from behind by Mehrajuddin Wadoo.  Instead of a penalty Bhaichung got a booking and will not be available for the next game. There were occasions when Deepak and Ishfaq were fouled and Nair ignored. The second goal conceded was from a free kick that was never there – Nair awarded this free kick to the  city club (Mohunbaganclub.com also congratulates Syed Rahim Nabi who made all the differences in this match)

Mohunbaganclub.com has learnt that the Club Officials are sending video footage to AIFF, and would request AIFF to see the standard of referring. The officials will request AIFF not to let Nair officate any of the Bagan matches in future.

In fact it started from the 4th minute when Ishfaq got a ball inside opposition box, and Nair whistled against Ishfaq – neither was Ishfaq off side, nor did he handle the ball.  The same referee seemed to cancel a clean goal that helped a Goa club earn a point in this i-League.

Nevertheless, Nair or no Nair, Mohunbaganclub.com and all the fans and supporters of Mohun Bagan – world wide – stand beside the players and wish them success.

Mohun Bagan today started practice for Churchill match.All the players were present in practice other than Baichung Bhutia. Baichung will miss next match against Churchill after referee showing him yellow card in last match, the decision was a questionable one as replay showed Mehraj had pushed Baichung in the box.

Team practiced for 1-1/2 hours today morning. After practice when asked if Mohun Bagan will miss the service of Baichung, Jose Barreto said, "Definitely we will miss Baichung, but we will have to make our plans accordingly without him." Commenting on preparation for Churcill match, he said, "We will definitely have plans for Odafa, he is a great striker and scored 6 goals in last match." On EB match, he said, "We just lost one match, before that we had won 10 matches in a row, East Bengal hardly did anything this season, for them beating us may be the goal, our goal is to win I league. It is surprising that few people are reacting in such as a way as if East Bengal by winning 1 match has got everything, whereas we have won 10 matches in a row and we had not achieved anything. We have won 2 tournaments this year and we are very much contender of winning I league too."

Coach Karim confidently said, "We will surely bounce back, we have done so many times this year like in KPL after George and MSc match, in Fed Cup after losing to Vasco, we won both tournaments. Right now we are title contenders of I league. Initially after the first few matches in I league, many people said we will fight relegation, now we are in 2nd position. After winning 10 matches in a row we have just lost one match, nothing more than that." When asked if he has anything to say to Subhash’ reactions, Karim said quoting Mahatma Gandhi "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. I respect all team’s coach. I follow certain ethics and will not say anything against coach of another team." He also added, "People should respect facts and the fact is that in this year we have played 36 matches, won 31 of those matches, won 2 tournaments and still quesions are being raised on our performance. We are still very much a title contender."

The 114th edition of the historic IFA Shield will most likely start from 25th August 2009 and the final will be held on 10th September, 2009. Today in a press meet at IFA Office, Secretary Mr. Utpal Ganguly said that AIFF has included IFA shield and Durand Cup in their yearly calendar. IFA is also trying to bring English Premier League Teams like Everton or Stoke City to play in the Shield. There will be either 1 foreign team if total number of teams is 8, or it may become 2 if total team participating in Shield becomes 10. Mr. Ganguly also told that from this year IFA Premier League and Super league will be merged with 17 teams total and will start in the first week of October. After 28th Feb, Kolkata Teams in the current I-League will play their rest of the home matches at Barasat Stadium.

11.9.2007 – that was the last time Bagan went down aganst KingfisherEast Bengal 2-3, as bhaichung Bhutia’s goal was cancelled by referee K. Shankar. After that Bagan went for a dream run and remained unbeaten for 9 matches. But Syed Rahim Nabi had finally led his club to break the jinx on 22.2.2009

Nabi played pretty well today  having scored 2 goals in the first half and had the final pass to Sunil Chettry who scored the third. Bagan went down 0-3. That means, Bagan went down in the 2nd position of the iLeague, and Sporting clube de Goa moved up. That also means sharing the platform with Manchester United of 11 consecutive wins – came to an end.

Not only Nabi, Yakubu, Abhra Mandal and M. Suresh played really well for KEB today. Bagan failed to break the KEB defense – as either Suresh or Abhra was there to stop Bagan from scoring. One should give full credits to Subhash Bhawmik’s team for this scoreline.

At the same time AIFF must review and see whether the referring standard of this game was up to the mark. There were some mistakes – and was all of them unintentional ? For e.g. Bhaichung  Bhutia was trapped inside the penalty box by Mehrajuddin but surprisingly the referee instead of awarding a penalty , booked Bhainchung. The second goal KEB scored was from a free kick that was gifted to KEB by the referee. There were few other occasions where the referee allowed KEB players to play act – waste time and earn free kicks. Throw-in for Bagan were converted to free kicks for KEB.

Besides, the midfield really flopped and defense seem to e fragile. Karim needs to repair this fast since Bagan will be facing Churchill next – and won’t get Bhaichung Bhutia’s service thanks to Dinesh Nair.

Fed Cup winners Mohun Bagan having created a record in the I-League face East Bengal Club on Sunday, 22nd Feb’08. Which team wins or loses is immaterial but statistics reveal that Mohun Bagan are better placed in winning this match also despite media hostility.

After Mohun Bagan has created a record by winning 10 consecutive matches in I league, as usual, a few media are trying to demean the efforts of team Mohun Bagan by constantly saying that team is lucky to win matches. It is really shocking that when a team from Bengal is a title contender after so many years, instead of staying with the team, few media are trying to find "faults" though majority is doing their job professionally and sensibly. By luck a team can win maximum 1-2 and not 10 wins in a row. Full credit goes to Karim Bencharifa who is doing a tremendous job so far this year. Mohun bagan has so far won Kolkata league, Federation cup, qualified for AFC Cup and is leading the I league table currently. We have seen Karim formulating strategy according to situation of the game and according to opponent team’s game plan.

In the last 10 matches, Mohun Bagan scored 16 goals and conceded just 2 goals and 4 of these 10 matches were away matches. In 2 of the above Matches against Dempo and Churchill who are title contenders, Mohun Bagan played more than 45 minutes with 10 man out of which one was an away match. After last match Karim said, "To win any big tournament, the main important factor is not conceding goals. If you see major tournaments in Europe, not always the team who scored maximum goals wins, usually it is the team who scores goals and does not concede much goal becomes the Champion." With the striking force Mohun Bagan have, scoring goals is not at all an issue. Baichung and Barreto CAN score goals and WILL score goals but the main factor is that coach has been successful in making the defence solid and making the defensive part of midfield right. Last 2 years, Mohun Bagan lacked a quality defensive medio. karim has prepared nicely Rakesh for this position and Rakesh is doing his job to perfection with help from Marcos whose inclusion has also helped our team a lot. Kareem also said, "You know, club officials, players, we coaching staff all have till now done our jobs and this has resulted in this dream run so far. Still we have many matches left and right now we are planning match by match and this 10 match win in a trot will be of no significance if we don’t win I league. All of our main target is now winning the I league."

About a month back, Baichung had said, "Match after match, all the players in our team are doing their job. The players who are playing for 90 minutes as well as those who are playing for 9 minutes and also those who are sitting in reserve bench all have done their job assigned by coach. Karim is a very good coach and credit goes to him for building the team spirit. There is good coordination between the junior and senior players in our team. Our coach gives importance to all the players, even those who sits in reserve bench. He has good Communication with all players. Every player thinks that coach gives him importance and that is the reason why they give their 100% while playing. Another thing which coach has done is that he has kept reserve bench ready and has prepared extra players for all positions."

Ishfaq, the left half of Mohun Bagan, is most probably the fastest footballer in India. He was a striker initially in his career. From last year IFA Shield, he has adapted nicely in the left half position and often causes panic to opponent defence by his run down the left flank. He is hopeful that Mohun Bagan will become I league Champions this year. Read the interview.

Question: Congrats Ishfaq on winning the Federation Cup and also the 10th consecutive win in I-league.

Ishfaq: Thanks a lot. Yes till now we have won 2 tournaments this year and I sincerely hope we make it 3 by winning the I league.

Question: What is your daily routine and what do you do in your leisure time?

Ishfaq: My day starts with prayer basically. I am a religious person. Then if there is practice, I go directly to the ground. A bulk of my leisure time is spent playing computer games, either football or some other games. I also do a lot of net surfing. In weekends, we watch English Premier League matches.

Question: How do you assess your performance this year?

Ishfaq: I am more or less happy with my performance. I think last year I also played okay but I got less chance. This year thanks to coach Karim, I have got much more chance and I have settled myself in left half position. Actually not only me, I think the whole team has got that confidence level from our coach. Our coach holds the team together very nicely. It is really not easy to control a team which has so many superstars. Another factor which I think is important for Karim is his age, he is only in his 40s.

Question: Last season you played mostly as a striker but Carlos used you in left half from IFA Shield onwards. Now, which position would you prefer to play?

Ishfaq: Right now, I would like to play in half only. I get more space to win the ball and also I can run with the ball.  Also now it gives me a pleasure to create goal scoring chances for Baichung and Barreto. Of course, if coach wants to use me in striker position, I would be happy to oblige, final decision will be taken by him in the best interest of the team.

Question: What are your roles when you play in 4-3-3 and 4-4-2? Are the roles different?

Ishfaq: Our coach till now has used two strategies 4-3-3 and 4-4-2. When we play three half as in 4-3-3, I have to hold the whole left side and I am not allowed to go up much, mainly playing in the midfield. In 4-4-2, I have to go forward often to help the strikers. I am okay with both formations. I think my fitness level is good right now, thanks to the coach and I can fall back to help my defence as well.

                                                               

 

 

Question: In 4-4-2, you are saying you are supposed to go up more often, but aren’t you supposed to fall back also and help the defence?

Ishfaq: It depends. If there are two players in our opponent team who mostly attacks from our left side, then I will have to fall back and help defence i.e. if Deepak is getting two players to defend, then I will have to help him definitely by going back.

Question: So in a way it depends on the opposition team’s strategy?

Ishfaq: Yes, but I personally mostly believe in offense. Once you are offensive, you know it keeps their defence at bay, their wingbacks don’t have the chance to come up much.

Question: Can you give any instance?

Ishfaq: Like I remember the game against Dempo, the away match in Goa, that was one of my best games, we played with 10 men. You have seen Barreto playing well but that match he was outstanding, I think that match is very special for him and also for the whole team. We played brilliant football. With 10 men, we had better ball possession than Dempo. The match was the turning point of this year’s I league. For Dempo, Anthony Perreira and Valerian were attacking from our left side. We nicely blocked them and did not allow them to play their natural game. This was one of the best matches of Mohun Bagan this year. With one man less, we worked very hard and we played much better football.

Question: So out of the two formations 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, which one you personally prefer?

Ishfaq: I love both, 4-3-3 takes a lot out of you, but I get more space, more duties to perform though all depends on coach.  I can play in all formations. I have played 3-5-2 for the national team as well but 4-4-2 is better than this, it is more compact. I personally prefer 4-3-3 as the role is slightly more challenging to me.

Question: Sometimes it is seen that you change flanks during the match? Do you do this on the coach’s instruction?

Ishfaq: Yes, the coach instructs us about this. Like in Air India match, James and myself changed flanks which resulted in the 1st goal by Barreto.

Question: We think that you are the fastest runner in the football field in India. 

Ishfaq: (laughing) With the ball, I somehow automatically start running when I get the ball, it comes naturally to me, it is a kind of God’s gift and what happens when I run at pace, it helps to create space for my strikers and my midfield as well. I get more power with the ball. I think the coach also appreciates my speed. However, I am a little bit slow without the ball, that is what I have to improve upon. I do run off ball but not as fast as I do with the ball.

Question: Previously you were in the striker position, so how did you develop the tackling and snatching part?

Ishfaq: Yes, previously I did not need to come back to help the defence as I was a striker but after I started playing as a half, I had to develop this part. I must tell you that it is all because of the coach, he developed my defensive part a lot. I loved to fight for the ball from beginning only, that was my action but tackling, falling back, helping defence, all these defensive qualities may be were within me but the coach got it out. It would be better to say that coach Karim has harnessed it.

Question: Ishfaq, we have seen many times that instead of crossing the ball, you tend to cut in and then may be give a pass or take a shot? Why is it so?

Ishfaq: I prefer this style of play. I am basically a right footer. I love to cross with right foot but I love to take shots with both left and right foot. Yes, I usually cross the ball less and cut in more because I get more options. I take a look and then I can take a shot, cross the ball or play one touch pass with another player and get close to the goal to score. That is actually my strength. I feel I can do it better rather than crossing the ball but it is not that I don’t cross the ball, I also do that. Actually, I think that to help Baichung and Barreto or any other striker, I feel that I would be able to help them better if I go in.

In the match against Air India, which we played in Mumbai, the 2nd goal, you can see, I made a down the middle run and gave a pass to Barreto. Baichung also made a brilliant dummy run and took 2 players with him.

In International football, you will see players like Ronaldinho, Henry, Ronaldo, they all play in left side but they are mostly right footed and usually they also cut in more than crossing the ball as cutting in gives more options.

                                                                                                

Question: Since you are saying you are right footed, do you prefer right half more than left half?

Ishfaq: Actually I can play in any position that the coach will put me in, but I prefer left half a bit more than right half as being a right footed player, it gives me advantage when I cut in from left to take a shot with my left or right foot.

Question: Have any of your family members played football?

Ishfaq: Nobody in my family played football other than my grandfather who has played some football. In fact, there are no professional footballers in my family.

Question: Are you a relative of Mehrajuddin?

Ishfaq: No, I am not.

Question: Say something about the initial days of your career?

Ishfaq: Initially I was a cricket player in Srinagar. Football is more popular, people love football. In spite of all the problems, they have not stopped organizing football tournaments, it is what people love over there and is popular among all generations. I played a lot of official tournaments for J&K cricket association. In fact, I was registered as a player there. However, football was my first love. Football is the only sports where we get jobs in Kashmir. Slowly I started playing both cricket and football simultaneously. I got an offer in JK bank but I was under age at that time, I was 17. We can’t join government office unless we are 18. My first coach in football was Satpal Singh, he was a good coach, quite a young guy, we won state league for YMCA and I became top scorer. I was awarded best player in 1999, I was playing as a striker. Then we went to play an Under-21 tournament for Jammu and Kashmir in Bangalore in 2003. We won zonal wise, I got best player over there. Then I was adjudged player of the tournament in All India level too.  We met West Bengal, Goa and I scored in all games. Ashim Biswas played in that tournament for Bengal, he was playing for national team at that team. We reached the semi final and we lost to Goa. I was held back, the organizers told me I have to stay here because I have been chosen as player of the tournament. That was the moment I really cherish. After that all professional claims came in my life. That tournament helped me in my football career a lot. In 2003, I went to HAL, I scored 7 goals in National League. I scored against major teams like East Bengal, Churchill, ITI, Dempo.

Question: What was the score against Mohun Bagan?

Ishfaq: Against MB we lost 1-0, George Ekka scored most probably.

Question: Continue.

Ishfaq: East Bengal was champion that year. The Indian coach Stephen called me for the national camp, preolympics and on my debut I scored for India against Turkmenistan, 1-0, the match was in Goa. Since it was the preolympics, it was basically an under 23 team with 2 seniors. After that, I also joined many Indian camps in 2004-05, senior camps as well. I was selected for one game in Indian senior team, but did not get chance, that was the World Cup qualifying match against Singapur. I was in Dempo then, my performance was okay there and the coach liked me. I stayed for three years in Dempo from 2004 to 2006. I was in the first team for first two years. In 2006, I did not play much due to injury in my knee. During my stay in Dempo, they won 2 national leagues, 1 Durand Cup and 1 Federation Cup.

Question: Were you playing as striker or half in Dempo?

Ishfaq: In dempo I played right half as well as striker. Till the Durand Cup, I was playing as striker continuously, I scored against JCT. I was in the first team but after Durand, they brought Beto and he played as striker, i was sidelined. Somehow we lost the first match against HAL in Fed cup and Dempo was out. The coach then changed his strategy, he put Beto in midfield and and paired me with Ranty in the striker position, then we played well and we won the I league, that season I scored 6-7 goals for Dempo. I got injured after that when we became champions.

Question: How did the Mohun Bagan offer come to you?

Ishfaq: When we became champion, I was in bed, and I did not play much. That year we won the national league also. I was offered a contract from Dempo for next year but I had not signed it till then and suddenly out of the blue came a call from Debasish Dutta. I was very much surprised.  I had a Mohun Bagan offer before also, but I had heard stories of Kolkata clubs not paying in time and stories about poor management, so I was thinking about the offer. Then I realized that may be God is giving me this opportunity to show my talent, to play in Kolkata and I accepted the offer. After I got a call from Debasish Dutta, in 5 minutes we finalized everything. After two days, I flew separately to Delhi, Mohun Bagan was coming to play against Dempo in Super Cup, I met Anjan Da, Debasish Da, I signed the contract over there. Same day, I took the return flight to Goa. I had a two year contract of Dempo that was getting over that year. Then I signed 1 year contract for Mohun Bagan and this year also I have signed the same 1 year contract.

                        

Quesion: Before coming to Mohun Bagan, you heard stories about management, what is your view now?

Ishfaq: I can tell you one thing, right now, the way Mohun Bagan is performing, one important reason is the officials, they are really doing a great job. This is one of the reason why the team has performed so well. If you ask me personally, I had no problem at all with club for last two years. The officials are all the time supportive when we were down, when we performed badly in the initial stage, they said "we are there, no problem." Even during those days, we got our salary on time. The Officials always stood behind the players even during the bad times, this is fantastic, this is what is needed.

Question: What is the basic difference between Goa and Kolkata?

Ishfaq: Well, there is lot of difference.  I tell you very frankly, I have enjoyed every bit in kolkata, it does not matter about the fans getting angry or anything, they have a right to get angry, they have lot of expectations from us, they love you so much and they cheer you all the time when you come in field. There are amazing moments of my life in Kolkata. When we played against Bayern Munich, I saw the stadium packed, believe me I was surprised, because I have never seen crowd like that. All Mohun Bagan supporters filling up the huge stadium, I was really surprised and very happy. It gave me encouragement to play well that day. Players always want big support from the crowd to cheer them up. It is not many times this happened in Kolkata. Because of Mohun Bagan, I got to play in front of Kahn against Bayern Munich, against Santos and also in front of Maradona, these were all big dreams coming true for me. Right now, i just pray that we can win the I league and end this season on a perfect note.

Question: Bayern and Santos coaches both said after the match that the best player of Mohun Bagan was Ishfaq.

Ishfaq: That was very generous on their part. I try to do my job nicely which the coach assigns to me.

Question: You have any plans for playing in a club outside India?

Ishfaq: Players need to dream big. If we don’t dream, we will not be able to reach high levels . I am very much sure that I can play much better than this. I will have to improve on certain aspects of my game. Right now, my only wish is that I will have to win this I-league. I think this will be one of the best years in the history of Mohun Bagan if we win I league, I really want to be part of that. All the players and coach are concentrating on this I league. About going abroad, I will definitely try to go out of India. I would want to tell myself later that at least I tried for something big.

Question: You want to give trial on your own or you will wait for offers?

Ishfaq: I will have to send my CVs first. There is a proper method. If things will work, then i will definitely go in trial, I wish to go to some Eurpean countries.

Question: Do you think standard of I league has improved because of foreigners?

Ishfaq: Yes, it helps a lot. Some people say that, Indian people do not get chance that much but if you have good quality foreigners like Barreto, other players will learn from him a lot and standard of football is bound to improve. Edu of JCT and Julius of JCT who has represented national team of Nigeria will by their presence improve standard of football in India. Julius was member of World Cup squad of Nigeria. These players certainly help to raise standard of Indian football. I have learnt a lot from Barreto, Beto and Ranty. Regarding Barreto, I can say that, he is always there to help us and guide us. Barreto has played in many major leagues of Asia. Talking about foreigners, I would like to give example of our coach Karim, his method, outlook is different. My life, my footballing the way I see, Karim has brought in new ideas. I think Karim is technically very strong, believes in strategy and technique of play and holding the team. Because of him, we have such a good team spirit. This is another reason why the team is performing well, the team is thinking as a unit. If India wants to start professional league, good quality coaches and good quality foreigners along with good Indian players are must.

Question: You had played under Indian coaches also? What is the difference?

Ishfaq: There are lots of difference, not that Indian coaches are not good, there are good quality Indian coaches but foreign coaches bring new ideas, latest strategies. I have talked about Kareem, another example is Indian team coach, Bob houghton. See how the Indian team is performing right now. many players are not performing well for club but performing so well for the country, credit should be given to Houghton for this.

Question: What are the differences between supporters of Goa and Kolkata?

Ishfaq: In Kolkata, people love football, we don’t have to play in front of empty stands like I did for other clubs, here in local league also the ground is packed with supporters. This gives a player a lot of moral boost.

Question: Do you feel in Kolkata there is lot of media pressure and also pressure from supporters?

Ishfaq: Yes, that is true, but if you have to be a good player, you have to manage all this. I know there are lot of critics. I thought in the match against Sporting de Goa, I played well but press wrote otherwise. As long as I am satisfied and my coach is satisfied, I am happy.

Question: You read newspapers? Do you get affected by criticism?

Ishfaq: I read papers. No, I don’t get affected. I see it this way. If a new player will come, media won’t write much about him. The paper writes critics only about star players. If they are writing anything against me, I am happy that I least they have expectation from me (laughing), that means there is something positive in me, otherwise they will not criticize me.

I will give more importance to what the coach says regarding my performance than what is written in a newspaper. I ask the coach if I have made any mistake. Our coach is always there for all players, he always welcomes us to share something. He points out mistakes separately, not always in front of everybody. Yes, in practice, if we do something wrong, he will say there but otherwise separately he says "these things I want you to improve."

                                                                                    

Question: Do senior players guide you? During match, you talk amongst each other?

Ishfaq: Barreto, baichung, Marcos, deepak always guides. Deepak is one guy who will appreciate you always. We many times point each others mistakes during match and even some times we say lot of bad words to each other (laughs) but it is only till ground, after match we don’t remember all this, such is our team spirit. that is how the team works.

Question: Which is your favorite goal in your career?

Ishfaq: My Indian team debut goal against Turkmenistan in a preolympic match is a very special one for me and also one of the best goals of my life, it was a long ranger left footed shot from about 30 yards out. I also cherish the goal against Santos in IFA Shield last year a lot. In last year’s Santosh Trophy, I scored a goal by head from top of the box.

Question: We don’t find lot of Kashmiri youth being part of the mainstream football, right now it is only you and Mehrajuddin. Any plan to promote J&K football?

Ishfaq: I definitely have plans. New Chief Minister of Kashmir is quite young, he is a sports lover as well. I and mehraj have plans to meet him. It will be of benefit if Kashmir get a small professional club over there. I will try my best to promote football in my state.

Question: Is there lack of quality Bengali strikers?

Ishfaq: Actually there is dearth of strikers in all states. There are no good strikers coming up after Baichung and Sunil. Among Bengali strikers, Gauranga of Chirag is talented.

Question: If you get good payment, would you like to stay in Mohun Bagan next year?

Ishfaq: My contract ends this season. I have not decided as yet, but in my childhood I have learnt one thing, when you seed a plant, you can keep it bare and water it and it can grow over the years at one place. If you remove it and put in some other place, it will not growthat much.

Question: That means you want to stay in Mohun Bagan?

Ishfaq: (Laughing) Actually it is always better to retain same team. Usually in Kolkata, the trend is to make changes in team. You can see the example of Dempo, they are performing well, even reached semi finals of AFC cup, this they did by keeping same team for years. Mohun Bagan has also started more or less the same thing from last year. Multi year contract is important. Every player takes time to settle, one year is not always sufficient time for a player to adapt to the club and start performing. About next year, I will decide later on but right now my main aim is to anyhow make sure that Mohun Bagan win the I league.

Question: So you prefer multiyear contract?

Ishfaq: There are both sides to multiyear contract. There should be one side that if player is not happy, he can leave. Team should be able to sell player like they do in outside countries. I don’t know in future if that will take place or not but hope it will be as Indian football is becoming more professional. I think When things between coach and player do not work out, it is better to sell off the player. FPA is working towards that. I am also a member of FPA. We are planning to launch website of FPA, which Baichung and me already attended in Mumbai who are making that website. A professional organization will create the website. They have made website for ICL also.

Question: What are your goals for future?

Ishfaq: My first most important goal right now is to win I league, we really want badly to win this I league, and then I may try outside India because after 10 years I want to tell myself, okay at least I tried to play outside. My first choice is Europe. I will play there where I will have new challenge, where I feel I will have to improve more to match them, where this will help me in future but I will decide on this after I league.

Question: In how many years do you think will India be reckoned as one of the top teams in Asia?

Ishfaq: It all depends on money. I am not talking about payment for players only but good sponsors are required. Quality is more or less there. See Japan, after Professional league started, they got good sponsors and see where they have reached now. Money is required to change the infrastructure, making new academies etc. eg. condition of grounds, when somebody gives u good pass, the ball bounces and becomes a bad pass. This hampers performance. Good stadiums are required with good grounds.  In Malaysian football, clubs have separate stadium, separate shop etc. Contrary to that see stadiums like Cooperage, the worst ground of India. I hate to play there. It takes everything from us. Ask Barreto, ask Baichung, they will give the same answer. After a match in Cooperage, we get the feeling as if we just played for 270 minutes, ground is too hard. Air India sometimes plays well there as they mainly rely on long passes and it becomes easy for their defenders to clear the ball.

Question: Which ground is the best in Kolkata?

Ishfaq: Barasat is very good, very soft, our mb ground is also well maintained. We could have played in our home ground itself but I think because opposition dressing room is not there, may be that is one of the reasons match is not being held here.

Question: Say something about your family.

Ishfaq: In Srinagar, my mother and father lives. I have one brother and one sister, brother is working in bangalore and sister got married.

Question: Any plans of marrige in near future?

Ishfaq: Not now, I want to concentrate on my career now.

Question: Did you expect to get a call from Indian camp?

Ishfaq: Yes, I am a bit disappointed. Judging by my performance, I feel I should have got a call. It does not matter whether i would have been playing for the national team or not, but I think I could have been called for the camp. This was one disappointment which I had but may be I did not fit this time into coach Houghton’s strategy, the way he wants to make his team. I have full faith in his ability, he is a great coach. May be my performance was not enough to satisfy him.

Question: Who is your ideal player in india?

Ishfaq: I really appreciate Baichung and Barreto right now. Barreto is always there to help, give advice, point out mistakes, to guide properly. Baichung is a player whom I look up to, we should all learn how professional a player can be, how he has managed everything, there is no indian player who can be made ideal better than Baichung. The heights he has reached is amazing, all credit goes to him. We all have so much to learn from him.

Question: We heard you always share same room with Baichung?

Ishfaq: Yes, I have good rapport with Baichung. Usually we stay in same room whenever we have match outside Kolkata. Somehow he likes my company, same goes for me also.  As I said lots and lots to learn from him, he is absolutely fantastic.

Question: Your ideal player outside india?

Ishfaq: My favorite player keeps changing (laughing). I am supporter of Arsenal. I like Fabregas a lot. I like Zidane also. Zidane and Fabregas have some similarity, game looks so easy when ball is around them, they always have that power to think quickly than other players and make decisions quickly. Football does not look complicated at all when they play. They have always fraction of second more than opponent to think and they utilize that only. It is fantastic. I was lucky enough to hear Zidane’s personal interview on BBC. I don’t know how they improve their vision and get that extra time to take decisions, somehow it is faster than opponent.  I think some people have that talent and of course practice makes it perfect. You see Barreto, somehow they have more time than we do. I really don’t know how they do this.

Question: Any comments on standard of referring?

Ishfaq: That is one thing I think needs desperate improvement for Indian football to improve. We should not always look only on footballers to improve, refereeing should improve as well. There are not enough quality referees in India. It is not that they make mistakes purposefully but quite a few of them fail to give correct decisions because of lack of quality. There are some referees who are very good. In the match against Sporting de Goa, Baichung was given offside in first half where he was not offside, Barreto was but when Baichung received the ball, Barreto was not interfering with the ball and so the decision was not correct.

Question: Do you think if past players become referee will that help?

Ishfaq: Not exactly that. I think we need well educated people coming up to take that profession with good football knowledge.

Question: How much do you think education is required to be a good sportsman?

Ishfaq: Believe me, eduation is extremely important. It helps to deal with foreign coach, it helps you in other things like understand football, read the law, read good journals, interaction with foreign players etc. Also a player can educate himself regarding football, to keep himself updated with what is happening in developing nations etc. It helps to read good books on football. I read a lot of books. I love to gather knowledge about everything. I am a little religious, so I read religious books a lot.

Question: Do you think standard of living is an important factor in performance?

Ishfaq: Yes, it is very important. Improving standard of living for footballer is very important like staying in a good place, eating better foods, taking care of yourself, all of which improves performance. When you start from zero, you don’t eat quality foods, you have to take care of these things. Now eating good food in a good restaurant will certainly help you. Riding bike and car also helps a lot. In Kolkata, there is so much pollution.  If you come in bus, you have to get freshened up and then go for the training while if you come via car, you are already mentally relaxed. Some people might find it weird, but for me it is really important and helps to stay focused and relaxed and cool headed.

                                                           

 

Question: Say something about our own Satya da.

Ishfaq: Very good point indeed. He is one person who always helps. I have lot of respect for him. What he has played, what he has achieved, not many people can achieve that and he is always there to help and very down to earth person. If I have done something wrong during the match, he will definitely tell me about what to do, that is very important.

Question: We performed so well against Sporting de Goa but against Mohammedan our performance were not up to the mark, do you agree?

Ishfaq: Definitely Mohammedan had a great game but our performance was not that bad. We also got many chances. In fact, in first half we played quite well. We have won 10 matches in a row in I league and 3 points is the most important factor and it is not possible for a team to play well in every match. I am hopeful about a positive result in our next match against East Bengal. Actually expectation is so much high from us now that if we play slightly bad one day, then it is reported that we played very badly.

Question: What do you have to say about the Lalampuia episode?

Ishfaq: Lalampuia is an extremely good person. Every person makes mistakes. Lalam has recognized his mistake and has agreed to rectify himself. This makes him a good human being. About his performance, he is a great player, there is no issue with that.

INTERVIEW: Subhojyoti Banerjee, Srijan Bhattacharya, Nirmalya Maity, Shiladitya Mitra

Coach Kareem today gave a written protest letter to all media against one particular Bengali media who had misquoted his statement in today’s edition. The protest letter was given in official letterhead of the club that says, “I am surprised to be informed that a local Bengali daily has misquoted me yesterday. The news wrongly mentions that I have challenged the coaches – local and foreigners of other Indian clubs. My statement during the press conference was clear and strangely only this daily carries this false news. I wish to clarify that I have utmost respect for all the coaches and members of the football fraternity. I reiterate that all the coaches working with Indian clubs, what ever Indian or foreigner are my colleagues and I hold them in high esteem.”

 

 

This incident is highly shocking, given that Mohun Bagan coach of this year, Kareem Bencherifa is such a gentleman and media friendly. He is mostly always available for comments after practice session of team. Sometimes, even he talks separately to electronic as well as print media. Coach never ever makes any loose comments against any person or any club. Even before match against lower ranked club, whether it is in I league or in Kolkata league, he will show his respect for them. He always lends a cooperating hand towards the media and he also expects the same thing from them. He is very particular and does not tolerate the fact that his statement be manipulated to make it a sensational one. A similar incident happened during Kolkata league when in a match Kareem had protested against a wrong offside decision given against Mohun Bagan. He went to linesman and showed his palm, trying to tell him that Player No. 5 was there, so how can Barreto be offside. Few print media misunderstood that and thought Kareem is about to hit linesman. They did not even cross check about the incident with linesman or Kareem. We know of the importance of media nowadays, but they also possess some responsibility and should be careful of what they are writing, as sometimes writing certain false things can create a false impression in the mind of people reading it. However, there are media persons who are sensible enough and doing their job to perfection.

Mohun Bagan is on top of I league table right now, and we really don’t want incidents that affects our coach, let him concentrate and do the job that he is doing so well along with all the players. We want Mohun Bagan to be champions not only for sake of supporters and officials of our club but also for sake of Bengal football.

 

Mohun Bagan’s main problem was in central midfield, especially defensive medio. Rakesh Masih who is originally a stopper, has fitted in nicely in this position. Rakesh is playing very well and his combination with Marcos has stabilized the team’s midfield a lot. Read his full interview.

Question: Congrats Rakesh on Mohun Bagan’s 9th consecutive win in I-league and for winning Federation Cup.

 Rakesh: Thanks a lot. Yes I am happy that Mohun Bagan is performing well and pleased that I am contributing in my way to team’s success. Yes, Federation Cup win was indeed a special one, we did qualify for Asia Cup.

Question: Who was your coach before you went to TFA?

Rakesh: I am from Gurdaspur, Punjab. I was in Mahalpur Academy under coach Ali Hasan. Many players like Manjit Singh, Harmanjit Singh Khabra, etc. are all from this academy.

Question: You joined TFA in which year?

Rakesh: I joined TFA in 2005. Actually I joined a little late than others of my batch. I missed the trial organized by TFA. I came to know about this a little late. My coach asked TFA whether they can arrange another trial for me, TFA agreed and then I got selected. My uncle also helped me. He is a past player of Punjab Police, Darshan Masih. He did got a call from East Bengal in his playing days but did not go as he had to leave his job in Punjab Police.

Question: What will you do if you get a job offer?

Rakesh: (Laughing) Today only I got a job offer. I talked about this with Satya Da. I have not finally decided about it but most probably I will not take the offer. I want to be a full-time professional player and I think if I join office, I will not be able to concentrate fully on my career.

Question: How far did you study? You always wanted to be a footballer?

Rakesh: I studied till Class 12. Yes I always gave less importance to education, wanted to be a footballer from childhood.

Question: Who was your coach in TFA?

Rakesh: My coaches were Ranjan Chowdhury, Vijay Kumar, Carlton Chapman. All of them were great coaches. We learnt a lot in TFA, especially the basics.

Question: You played as a defender in TFA?

Rakesh: Actually I played in a lot of positions. Ranjan Sir used to keep me in defence, he had more faith in my ability as a defender whereas Chapman Sir did a lot of experiment with me. In some tournaments, where Chapman Sir was coach, he tried me as central midfielder, left half and even as a striker. I played more or less well in all positions. In Steel Tournament held in Jamshedpur, I played for Jamshedpur district as a striker and scored 5 goals from 4 matches. I can play in any position, all depends on coach of team, where he wants to use me.

Question: Any foreign tours you had?

Rakesh: Yes, I went to play in Srilanka for a friendly match of Under-20 Indian team and also toured Bangladesh as part of Under-23 Indian team. I went to England and also played in Wells cup from TFA, in the past Andre Shevchenko had played in the tournament.

Question: Your remarkable match while in TFA?

Rakesh: In Jamshedpur, we played a practice match against Mohun Bagan. We were trailing by 3-0 at lemon break. In 2nd half, we scored two goals but we eventually lost the match 3-2. Coach Carlos Perreira of Mohun Bagan praised us and was particularly happy with mine and Henry’s peformance.

Question: Heard you wanted to join Mohun Bagan after TFA.

Rakesh: Yes you are correct. After the practice match in Jamshedpur, I had made up my mind that I will join Mohun Bagan after talking to Jose Barreto. When we had a talk with Barreto, he told us about the club, how good the officials are and the overall environment and last but not least about the supporters. I also wanted to play with Baichung and Barreto.

Question: How many years agreement you have with Mohun Bagan?

Rakesh: All of the TFA players have 2 years agreement.

Question: Any difference of coaching while in TFA and under Kareem?

Rakesh: See the main difference is that TFA is an academy where we learnt the basics very nicely while in Mohun Bagan, we have to concentrate on winning trophies because that is very much required in top clubs. Here basics is taught as well as match situation, setpiece practice etc. Kareem Sir is an exceptional good coach, he gives a lot of stress to fitness, usually he does not want to play an unfit player unless he is fully fit. See the case of Branco. Coach gave him proper rest and will not use him until he is completely fit. He did not take any risk by playing an unfit player, it could have aggravated his injury further. Kareem Sir never distinguishes between senior and junior players, he gives importance to all players, whether he is part of first team or not. He does a lot of situation practice, the second goal for Mohun Bagan against Air India was a result of that. The way Ishfaq snatched the ball and made a down the middle run and gave pass to Barreto, coach had taught us such movements in practice. I am not taking anything away from Ishfaq’s run or Barreto’s finish, it was indeed a world class goal.

Another thing, in Kolkata, ground conditions are very heavy during Kolkata league and to continue playing well in all tournaments, we must have good fitness, I follow coach’s instruction regarding this. I have seen Barreto, Marcos, Baichung spending extra hours in gym after practice and it is due to their dedication that they are still playing so well.

Question: In Mohun Bagan you played both as defensive midfielder as well as stopper, which one do you prefer?

Rakesh: As I told u, I will play in whatever position coach will ask me to play. I am comfortable in both positions. Kareem Sir will take the final decision on team composition. Against Bayern, I played in stopper while against East Bengal, my first match under Kareem Sir, I played in midfield.

Question: Did you lose hope after the debacle in the initial phase of I league?

Rakesh: Actually, I knew one good match would change our fortune. After the away match loss against Sporting de Goa, we were demoralized. In team meeting after the match. Barreto and Baichung said to all of us that club officials are giving so much to us and did not blame any one of us for the defeat, so it is now time that we start playing as a team and start winning matches. In this context, I would like to tell you that, like every month we got our cheques in time in that month also when we were not performing well in I league. After draw against Air India, we even got our incentives of Kolkata league. The officials of Mohun Bagan are very professional.

Question: Do senior players motivate during match?

Rakesh: Yes, Baichung, Barreto and other seniors always help us and gives us advice during match. In Air india match, after we scored our 2nd goal, for last 15 minutes Air India was building up pressure, I was around center circle at that time, Baichung asked me to go back in defence. Sometimes, when we make mistakes during match, Barreto says to us "dal roti" (laughing) means cool down, simple play. I remember in Kolkata league, after losing 2 points in one match, Barreto called us next morning and we had a swimming sesion together, this really helped us to relax a lot.

Question: In midfield, do you like playing as defensive medio or you prefer attacking?

Rakesh: Actually every player wants to go and attack for scoring goals but if coach asks me not to overlap, I don’t do that. In the initial matches this year, Kareem Sir asked me not to go for attack much and to stay to consolidate defence but after arrival of Marcos, now sometimes he said that I can go and overlap, in that case Marcos stays back vice versa.

Question: Say something about Kolkata.

Rakesh: This is indeed a great city, so much love for football. In Punjab, hardly there was any crowd in the matches. Here stadium gets filled up. In Kolkata league also, most of the matches had packed galleries, it really helps us to perform well, motivates us to give our best. Definitely there is pressure while playing in Kolkata but I have no complaint regarding that as I do not have problem playing under pressure. My first two matches for Mohun Bagan were against Bayern Munich and East Bengal, both matches were big matches.

Question: What are your future plans? Any interest of giving trial for foreign clubs?

Rakesh: Till now, by God’s grace, I am having a successful career, I have always been selected in first team whether in TFA or Mohun Bagan. I will have to continue that. I have not decided about foreign clubs as of yet. First let me continue playing well for few years and then if offer comes I will decide.

Question: Indian senior team coach Bob Houghton has selected you, your reactions.

Rakesh: I am very proud that I have been selected. I will have to play well for India. He is a very good coach. In Hong Kong, I came as a substitute in place of Pradeep. I played with Climax Lawrence in midfield. The formation which Houghton used is same as what we play in Mohun Bagan and I played in the same position i.e. defensive medio. Previous to this, I have represented India in many under-age tournaments. So, in a way, this is not a new experience for me.

Question: Who is your ideal in Indian Football?

Rakesh: Mahesh Gawli. Once after India senior team performed badly, a decision was made to give chance to some juniors, I got chance and played with Mahesh, Pradeep etc. at that time.

Question: What about International Football and your favorite team?

Rakesh: I support Arsenal and Brazil and my favorite player is Kaka.

Question: AIFF might cut down number of foreigners in each team to 2 from next year, you welcome this?

Rakesh: Yes this will be good for Indian players as they will get more chance.

Question: Do you watch movies? Your favorite Actors?

Rakesh: Usually I watch sports channel most of the time but yes I do like to watch hindi movies. My favorite actors are Amir Khan and Kajol.

Question: How many brothers and sisters you have?

Rakesh: I have 3 elder sisters and 1 elder brother. As I told you, my house is in Gurdaspur, it is near Pakistan border, so there is little tension always. My family members are always updated about the matches of Mohun Bagan and they are happy with my performance. They tell me that I should not get carried away by my performance.

Question: The last question, do you think Mohun Bagan will be champion of I league?

Rakesh: Yes definitely we are one of the favorites to become champions. We have recovered nicely and will have to continue with our winning spree. Now we have a great team spirit and I hope that we will become champions, but still we will have to win 5-6 matches.

INTERVIEW: Shiladitya Mitra and Nirmalya Maity

Mohun Bagan it seems is set to break all records this year as they are now in top of the I league table after winning their 9th consecutive match. Today they beat Sporting Clube de Goa in their home match by 1-0, goal being scored by Baichung Bhutia in 76th minute. Mohun Bagan had already created record by winning 7 matches in a trot, now they improved their record by winning their 9th match in a row.

Mohun Bagan lineup was the same as of last match against Air India and started the match in a positive note with Marcos giving a pass to Ishfaq who ran down the flank and delivering a cross which was a little wayward and James could not reach the ball. Sporting coach had said before the match that he will not man-mark either Barreto or Baichung but in reality we saw the opposite. We saw Sporting players continuously marking Barreto and oftentimes bringing him down. In the course of the match, three players of Sporting de Goa was booked for infringement. Sporting coach admitted after match that his main tactics was to cut the supply line of Mohun Bagan by marking Marcos and also not giving any free space to Barreto. In a way, they were slightly successful in doing so in first half but in 2nd half this did not work and Mohun Bagan got many chances to score. Barreto played exceptionally well with 1-2 Sporting players constantly marking him. Regarding tactics of Sporting, Kareem said, "Yes they were marking Marcos and so I asked him to stay more in opponent half, so that he can take one player away from Sporting’s attack as in first half they sacrificed one of their strikers who were busy with Marcos. I asked Rakesh to play from deep as Marcos was mostly in opponent half."

Coming back to the match, Wilton Gomes was shown yellow card within 5 minutes for foul on Barreto. In the next minute, Sporting made a nice move when Viviano got the ball at the edge of the box but his shot went over cross bar. In 15th minute, Mohun Bagan got the first chance when from a James center, Baichung headed the ball which Sporting defence failed to clear and Barreto suddenly got a loose ball and he promptly took a left footed shot which just grazed the post and stayed out. Sporting then dominated the match for about 15 minutes or so, Rakesh Masih and James Singh looked slightly off colored today. In this period, Sporting was easily moving the ball with not much resistance from Bagan midfield but defenders played well and averted danger time and again. In between, Nathaniel took a superb shot from about 25 yards out which Sangram dived to his left and made a great save. Mohun Bagan came back strongly and from a Marcos free kick, Masih almost scored but his head went over cross bar. In first half, Sporting were also successful in cutting down attacks of Mohun Bagan via both flanks as we did not see much of Ishfaq’s solo run. Just at the fag end of the half, referee made two controversial decisions. First time, Baichung headed the ball from James free kick which hit post and goalkeeper brought the back to play from inside goal, both referee and linesman overlooked the incident. Television replay clearly showed that the ball had gone in. In the very next minute, Odafe lobbed the ball towards Sporting goal and the latter’s defence went up to trap Barreto offside but Baichung, who was not in offside position, ran for the ball and got the ball in open but unfortunately linesman ruled him out offside. Certainly Barreto was offside but Baichung was not. The first half ended goalless with both teams playing well. Sporting really gave Mohun Bagan a run for their money in this half and fought nicely. Another thing which worked slightly in favor of Mohun Bagan was substitution of Luciano who had to be replaced by Micky Fernandes due to injury.

In 2nd half, Mohun Bagan was again unlucky this time as in 1st minute off a long throw from Odafe, the ball hit hand of a Sporting player but referee did not give penalty as he thought it might have been done unintentionally. In 55th minute, Mohun Bagan made a great move via Marcos and Barreto who played couple of passes amongst each other and final pass was given by Barreto to Marcos whose shot deflected for corner from close range. James Singh continued his poor form in 2nd half also and then Kareem made a double change within space of 5 minutes bringing on Lalkamal and Tulunga in place of Rakesh Masih and James Singh. This worked wonders for Mariners as within minutes, Barreto was involved in the best move of the match when he got the ball in midfield with 3 players surrounding him, he nicely dribbled the ball past all of them, shielded the ball nicely and delivered a inch-perfect cross for Baichung who could not head the ball properly. Junior then made a solo effort midway in the half when he took a blistering shot from outside box which Sangram again stretched himself to make another great save. Mohun Bagan was unlucky not to score in 74th minute when from a long throw of Odafe, Marcos back headed the ball and Habibur further deflected the ball off his head which hit crossbar and went straight to Baichung whose head was saved from goalline by Felip. Baichung, however, scored a brilliant goal within a couple of minutes. Lalkamal took a corner which was headed by Odafe in far corner, Barreto tried a bicycle kick but could not connect the ball properly, Baichung who was standing facing his own goal, suddenly turned almost 180 degrees and took a left footed shot which surprised Sporting goalie and went to the back of the net making it 1-0 in favor of Mariners. A great finish indeed from Mohun Bagan captain. Sporting pressed hard for goal in the last stages of the match and On one occasion Junior got a loose ball in box but his side volley went over crossbar. Odafe also made a mistake when he could not head the ball properly and the ballooned up and went straight to Sporting player inside Bagan box but his volley went out harmlessly. Mohun bagan finished the match winning 1-0. Overall the match was a keenly fought match with Sporting de Goa giving a great fight but at the end Mohun Bagan emerged winners and continued their golden run by registering their 9th successive win in this I-league. They now have 30 points from 14 matches and are leading the group table. Sporting de Goa are in 2nd position with 28 points from 13 matches.  Baichung was adjudged Man of the Match.

After the match, Sporting coach said, "We were unlucky but Mohun Bagan played well. I am not satisfied with refereeing, especially in 2nd half. He did not allow us to move, everytime he was blowing whistle against us. Mohun Bagan did not play that well like their last few matches, they were mainly relying on long balls, it reminded me of Kolkata team’s performance say a decade back when their style were mainly via long ball." When asked whether Baichung’s head had gone in, he said, "I was far away from the scene and did not see it properly", though surprisingly the incident happened in the half where Sporting reserve bench players were sitting. He still hopes of a comeback when he said, "There are still 7 matches left and we will have to play well to keep ourselves in the title race. Right now, Mohun Bagan, Sporting de Goa and Churchill are favorites to win the tournament but other teams can also bounce back soon."

Kareem looked a little relaxed when he said, "Before the match I had said to you all that this is not the match that will decide who will win I league because of 2 reasons. (1) I knew this match was very important for us, but being a coach my job is to take pressure away from players and I knew if I would have said otherwise, it would have created immense pressure on players by press and supporters. (2) Indeed I believe that though this match was important but not THE important match as now we have still 7 matches left and we will have to continue with the winning streak. I am happy that at least now we don’t have to look to other teams for losing points, now ball is in our court. If we win all the matches, we will be champions, no matter who loses or wins other matches. But still we have long way to go, it is like we have to still climb few more mountains and the trophy is hiding behind some mountain (laughing)." He added that he is very much satisfied with his defence and said for a team to win a trophy not only scoring goals but it is also very important that the team should not concede more goals. "You can see in major leagues throughout the world, it is not always the teams who score more goals wins the tournament but it is the team who wins by conceding less number of goals takes the trophy. In the last 6 matches, we have conceded just 3 goals. Just scoring 1 or 2 goals is not important. I know we will score goals but most important factor is not letting in goals", he said.  Kareem also praised his players’ commitment and admitted that wing play was not that good in this match, "Yes, delivery from the flanks were not up to mark today. I had a talk with James regarding this after match. It was just a off day for him. I am sure he will come back strongly. Both Lalkamal and Tulunga had a great game after they came as substitute, not taking anything away from Rakesh or James. I am very happy with overall spirit of the team. Deepak was complaining of pain in his knee in half time but he still wanted to play and played the full 90 minutes. Such is the commitment of Mohun Bagan players."
 
Mariners will get the weekend rest and on Monday there will be practice in morning as well as afternoon. In the morning, full team will practice but in the afternoon only the reserve bench players will be seen in action. On Tuesday, Mohun Bagan will play a practice match against George Telegraph where most of the first team players will not play and the match will be important for players who are recovering from injury like Vashan, Branco, Lalampuia. Kareem will assess their match fitness from this match.
