Season starts, Mariners are ready to set momentum from the begining

Tollygunj Agragami is the name of the team with whom Mohun Bagan will start its campaign of the season 2010-11. As we know Tollygunj Agragami was renowned giant killer in Kolkata Maidan but mariners are ready to show their best on the ground from the first match straightway. Mohun Bagan is the last three times champion and overall 29th times champion of Kolkata League and they would like to make it 4th consecutive time and overall 30th time as well.

The team’s pratice was held today in the morning and there was a match between 1st team and 2nd team where 1st team beat 2nd team by the goals of Surabuddin and Muritala. It is good for the team that number of players in the team have the scoring ability, when the strikers will not be able to score the others must do it.

Coach Stanly Rozario told that he is very happy with residential camp which was completed successfully without any injury and they would like to set momentum from the start of the season by winning the match in healty manner. He said to the reporters on the eve of of the first encounter of his team, "It’s always good if you start off with a convincing win.”

As many as six players are likely to make debut tomorrow for mariners against Agragami. They are Kinshuk Debnath, Rahul Kumar, Okwy Diamondstar (PAO), Surabuddin (u-19), Dhanrajan and Muritala. Apart from them in the first XI others are likely to be Goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, Jayanta Sen, Ishfaq Ahmed, Jose Barreto and Ashim Das. Edeh Chiddi, who is yet to convalesce from viral fever, is unlikely to feature in starting -XI.

Bagan signs young and old guns

The club officials have been busy this summer securing the services of key players for the Mariners. Today we have had the players sign new contracts. Whilst it is important to sign new players, to freshen the squad, it is just as important to secure the players that are already in your squad. The satisfactory part of these signings is that there are young local players including those of MBSFA, an indication of the direction in which Mohun Bagan is slowly moving. Surkumar Singh and Rakesh Masih are the two players who have not signed today due to their national duty. They will sign later

Following players have signed today:

Ishfaq Ahmed (Captain), Jose Barreto, Chidi Edeh, Muritala Ali, Dhanrajan, Sangram Mukherjee, Ashim Biswas, Biswajit Saha, Dipendu Dowary, Gouranga Dutta, Harpreet Singh, Jacken Sebastian, Jayanta Sen, Karan Atwal, Kingshuk Debnath, Manish Maithani, Nagimuddin Mollick, Okwy Diamondstar, Parminder Singh, Proloy Dutta, Suman Dutta, Surabuddin Mollick, Rahul Kumar, Sagram Mandi, Santosh Oraon, Satish Kumar Jr., Shilton Paul, Sk. Azim, Snehasish Chakraborty, Souvik Chakraborty.

Mohun Bagan will play against Tolly. Agragami on Wednesday 1st September in their first match of Sahara CFL at Mohun Bagan Ground from 3.30pm onwards.

A successful pre-season camp: Stanly ; Chiddi starts practice

Returning from the recently concluded pre-season camp today evening in Kolkata, Mohun Bagan coach sounded elated. “It has been a successful camp, primarily so, as it was an injury free camp. Football is infamously well-known as a body contact game and the chances of injury are relatively high. Not only can it happen in the matches, also, it can happen in the practice sessions. I am glad that our players didn’t get injured.”

Stanly adds, “Also, boys benefited from the other aspects of the game – team building comes next. Apart from gymming, swimming, and practicing together, we all ate and stayed together 24 x 7. Players bonded well,  we’ve developed a great camaraderie, and we came out as a happy lot. This will definitely help us for the rest of the season!”

“Not to forget that we had few presentation sessions, where we stressed on motivational, technical, and psychological aspects of the game.”

Asked about the host of newcomers getting integrated with the senior players of the team. Stanley said, “Several talented newcomers have joined Bagan across the country. Not only have we had players like Barreto and Chidi, who easily qualifies as a role model. Also, we have several senior players like captain Ishfaq, Sangram, and Snehasish. So, sharing space with them itself gives motivation. The new boys looked up to their seniors on the field as well as off the field.”

Being asked about how the new players breaking into the team. Stanley replies, “We have to play 50 matches in a season. I’m talking about minimum number of matches – 16 in KPL, 26 in I-league, plus Federation Cup, Durand Cup, IFA Shield, et al. No way that a single player can play that many matches,” pauses coach.

“There will be time when the players will be unavailable thru off-form and other matters, leaving aside the other important aspect, which is injury. So, every one will get a chance to show their mettle. Then, it is up to them to perform and rise in the big occasion.”

Net-net, a successful pre-season camp, with some good display in the practice matches. So, now all eyes set for next Wednesday, September 1, when Bagan takes on Tollygunge Agragami in season’s first encounter at the Sahara CFL 2010 premier division.
Meanwhile,Edeh Chiddi started his fitness training at the racecourse ground recovering from fever. He told that he is enough fit to play for his team.

Go for it, Mohun Bagan!

Mariners defeat Uttar Banga-XI by 8-0

It was one way traffic at Siliguri where Mariners thrashed Uttar Banga-XI by 8-0 in an Exhibition match at the Siliguri Kanchanjangha Stadium. Sangram was there under the bars in the first half while Shilton was the custodian in the second half.

The 1st goal was scored by Barreto from penalty after Muritala was pulled down inside the box in the 15th minute. Chidi down with fever, Muritala wins confidence of coach

A fever which, refrained striker Chidi Edeh from practicing in the ongoing preseason camp at Siliguri Stadium has taken a grim detour.Quickly acting upon it, team management took a decision to send him back to Koltata for recuperating. Also, this action mitigates other teammate not getting affected in the fever.

This is a definite worrying sign for Bagan as they play their first match of the season on the Kolkata Premier League on September 1 and that Chidi hardly got any practice ever since he joined the camp after coming from Nigeria.

But, what is not worrying and giving enough assurance to coach Stanley is the other Nigerian and the recruit from now defunct Mahindra United. Subair Muritala Ali along with old wily, Barreto attacked opponents’ defense several times in the practice match played yesterday.

The central defense in the form of Diamondstar and Rahul Kumar also gave assurance to coach.

There will be no practice on Sunday.

Ashok Ghosh passed away

Ex Mohun Bagan Cricket Secretary and renowned sports person, Ashok Ghosh passed away on Thursday. Prafull Patel, the AIFF President told that he was an icon amongst the Football Officials in India. He was the pioneer behind the Nehru Gold Cup. May his soul rest in peace.

Will Okwy Diamond star for Bagan?

Are we all set to see the PAO in trial Okwy Diamondstar donning Green and Maroon colors? Now that’s a million rupee question, and all seems to be going well in that direction.

It is not at all news that he has marked his impression in the 4-days of stint in the ongoing pre-season camp at Siliguri. Neither is it news that the team is extremely pleased with his ball possession, ball clearance, positional sense, and man marking capabilities.

Then what is the news?

Well the news, which came into the light of the club management recently, is that the African born Aussie is contracted to his current club, Knights Army, Perth till September, and that his club might delay the clearance.

However, what is heartening is that Diamondstar himself has shown keenness to play for Mohun Bagan and he is confident of getting clearance from the Perth-based club. He along with his agent and the Mohun Bagan club officials are working out on the modalities.

Club is interested for an annual contract, however, coach Stanley Rosario would give his final verdict on Friday, August 20.

Striker Chidi and Diamondstar are childhood friends. Are we set to see a re-union of sorts? Are we set for see Diamondstar marshalling Bagan’s defense?

Only time will tell. Whatever may be the case, let’s all hope for the best for Mohun Bagan!

Stanley stands for four foreigners in the First-XI

Mohun Bagan coach Stanley Rozario stands for four foreign players to play together in the first-XI. He feels annoyed by the decision of AIFF, as there are four foreigners already in his team including a player of Asian quota. Though Okwy Diamondstar is now under trial, still his performance in the first couple of days practice bring some relief for Rozario. But the sudden decision of All India Football Federation made a mess of his plans. Therefore, he requested to club officials to take initiative regarding this matter and MB officials send a letter to AIFF to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, there was practice for single session on Wednesday at Siliguri for Mariners. It was a rainy day and at after-noon session team came to practice and played a practice match after some physical conditioning. The practice match was tied 2-2. Okwy Diamondstar scored a goal from corner by a header.

Diamondstar scores, impresses coach

Third day of the pre-season camp in Silguri witnessed some exciting moments. Started of with a practice match between the MohunBagan players, newcomer striker Jacken Sebastian scored, and above all PAO on trial, Okwy Diamondstar scored from a spectacular header.

The last moment definitely made Coach Stanley happy. Diamondstar has impressed one and all with his with his height and the way he uses that as his advantage.

It seemed like a happy atmosphere prevailing in the camp, yet the players looked serious. The game ended in a 2-2 draw. Former TFA graduate Karan Atwal and striker Asim Biswas, making a stern comeback scored the other goals.

Barreto and Muritala too had a field day. Other foreigner, Nigerian Chidi kept himself busy in Gym and warming up exercises. Coach reckoned to give Chidi some more fitness time before he actually gets to the game.

Okwy seems to be okay

Nigeria born Okwy Diamondstar, the new comer PAO for Mariners from Australia got pass mark in the first day’s practice. Although Stanley Rozario doesn’t want to make any comment on him because this is the first day for the player in the practice. He wants to see him two or more days and then he will come to the decision.

After the day’s practice Okwy told that difference of  climate between Australia and India is the first thing to adjust  and he added that he liked Siliguri’s weather. In the practice he played well and draw attention of officials and team management. He did a perfect tackle to Barreto and covered him well in the box, even though Souvick scored a good goal by header.

Harpreet Singh from Punjab will be recruited by Mohun Bagan this year. He is a player of Central Defence.
