Practice Sessions (4th Part) – FC BARCELONA

mohunbaganclub.com tries to bring in a report on Practice sessions of various clubs of the world. These sessions perhaps would feed in some necessary input to the coach Santosh Kashyap, the players and the support staff – as the team Mohun Bagan is getting for iLeague now. Today – we bring in some input on Tito Vilanova’s team.

Barcelona clearly has two teams – senior team and team B ( reserve team of team A) – in  Spain, the reserve team play in the same league system as the senior team.  However, they cannot play in the same division. FC Barcelona’s Team B is called Futbol Club Barcelona B.

The practice session timing for the whole week is announced beforehand. This can happen in the morning as well as in the evening. Weather reports and match schedules do have an impact on the roasters.

During practice session selective players of Team B are invited to practice with the seniors. The injured players or players with fitness problems stay in the gym to do specific work to help gain fitness. They work out in isolation from the rest of the squad.

21 players of the senior team usually practice together until a player is injured and isolated.

Initially the players flock together and the coach brief the team about the upcoming game, the opponent, their strengths and weaknesses, strategies and target.

The players then jog for a while and perform some free hand exercise.  This is mostly done at the midfield area.

This is followed by football drills. This include –

a) Passing drills

b) Dribbling drills

c) Shooting drills

d) Control drills

e) Heading drills

Goalkeepers go for the goal keeping drills as well.

This is followed by ‘with the ball’ session. Here the players practice passing and ball control for a while.

Following drills are considered for with the ball drills –

1) Call to receive – here around 6 players constantly pass 5 balls to each other in a random manner and each will have to pass the ball to a team mate in one touch

2) Avoiding obstacls – here two players have some obstacles between them and will have to pass the ball to each other without hitting the obstacles with the ball

3) Circle drill – Here one player will be inside a circle of players and all others in the circle will have a ball each. They will pass on the ball to the player inside the circle – he will have to receive it and send it back to the originator

4) Short and long passes – here the players go for a shorter pass to another player – and then the second player go for a log pass to a third player. The third player receive the ball – go for a short pass to a fourth player who then opt for a long pass to the first player.

5) Backward and Forward – here a player passes the ball to a second player – then jogs a bit – comes back to his position and then receives the pass from the second player – passes the ball back to the second player – jogs once again and so on.

For Dribbling drills the players opt for straight races and obstacle races.

Various shooting drills are taken care of ( one may recall Bagan’s recent failure in the Federation Cup was due to poor shooting ability) – this include –

a) 1-2 shoot

b) Turn and shoot

c) First to the ball and shoot

d) Cross, control and shoot

e) Collect and shoot

f) Running at angles

g) Pass, pass and shoot or pass, run and shoot

h) Dribble and shoot

For heading drills – throw in and heading and heading for near and far posts are practised. Both offensive and defensive headings are considered.

For the goalkeepers – emphasizes are done on anticipation, decision making and catching.

Afterwards,  two player form a team and go for stamina building runs together. This is followed by obstacle course.  Then by keeping the simulate human figures an attacker and a defender go for the ball – the attacker would have to get past the defender with the ball while the defender needs to foil the attack.

Then the players go for short playing sessions for each half before they conclude the training for the day.

Fans come under one banner to protest

A bunch of mohun bagan supporters and members flocked before the club tent today to share their anger and grief with the club officials at 9am today. The fans did not have to spit on the players or officials or create panic – but were rather calm and quiet in a peaceful protest at the club premises.

It all happened a day before when a Bagan fan Subir Das asked for a peaceful gathering in the club premises to protest against the current situation and poor performance of the senior football team. His message went across to various Mohun Bagan Fan clubs.  The fans and supporters dropped off the banners of respective fan clubs and come under the biggest banner of ‘MOHUN BAGAN’.  The fans shared their sorrows and angers peacefully – and Rahim Nabi came out and talked to the fans.

The fans were there at the club premises till 11am and hoped that the situation will now improve in favour of mohun bagan and their peaceful movement will definitely be not wasted.

Following is from the column of Subir Das –

"Peaceful Protest at Mohunbagan Tent was an overwhelming, roaring success. A team of disciplined Mohunbagan-lovers got their messages across to the concerned parties, without uttering a single word. I personally feel immensely satisfied having taken a pro-active measure towards bringing back the good times !! However the best part is the united effort of all the fan clubs, forum like SMS, MOM, MBG long with some common man like me under 1 banner – MOHUN BAGAN. I wanted all the mariners to pronounce only one word ‘MOHUNBAGAN’.. Today, even if it was for 2 hours, we ceased to become NDA, UPA Govt. like " milijhuli sarkar and became a single party – MOHUN BAGAN. And after the success of this 1st protest and the media attention we received I hope that next time onwards there will be a more fan followers joining in this noble event. And finally I would like to say that Yes , we do have the power , if we are persistent in this cause , to bring a better future for our MOHUN BAGAN." (sic)
