“The referee is on our side”

Former East Bengal FC head coach Óscar Bruzón recently sparked a major controversy by making an explosive social media claim involving referee bias and internal club politics.

Bruzón stated that “the Master” (widely speculated to be an internal club official or legacy member) tried to compromise the team’s integrity by claiming the referee would favor East Bengal.

Bruzón explicitly clarified that this claim was completely false, adding that the referee called a perfectly fair, neutral, and unbiased game. He brought it up to highlight malicious internal interference and “cancerous” elements working within the club’s administration.

Despite leading East Bengal to a historic 22-year-wait-ending Indian Super League (ISL) championship during the 2025–26 season, Bruzón chose to reject a contract renewal. He officially parted ways with the club in June 2026, citing a complete lack of long-term vision, structure, and intense internal friction from club legacy members. He has since taken over as the head coach of Indonesian side Bhayangkara Presisi
