এক হারিয়ে যাওয়া বড় ম্যাচ – A forgotten derby win!

আমরা বহু বছর ধরেই একটা ব্যাপারের সাথে সুপরিচিত যে, বড় ম্যাচ বা ডার্বির পরিসংখ্যানে আমাদের পাশের ক্লাব সুযোগ পেলেই বিকৃত করে দেয়। তার ফলে দেখা যায়, মাথায়-মাথায় জয়ের হিসেবে ওরা সেই আমাদের থেকে আটটা বা দশটা এগিয়ে! এই পুকুর চুরির কাজে ওরা তো সিদ্ধহস্ত বটেই, আর সেটা সহজেই সম্ভবপর হয় বঙ্গ মিডিয়া আর ক্রীড়ামহলের একটা বড় অংশ ওদের পক্ষে থাকায়। সে যাই হোক, আমাদের সর্বদা প্রয়াস থাকবে, এই অন্যায় এবং মিথ্যাচারকে নস্যাৎ করে সত্য উদ্ঘাটন করা। শেষ কয়েক বছরের মধ্যে আমাদের কিছু সভ্য-সমর্থকদের নানা অধ্যাবসায় এবং গবেষণার ফলে সেই কাজ বেশ খানিকটা সম্পন্ন হয়েছে, স্বীকৃত হয়েছে ১৯২১ সালে মোহনবাগানের প্রথম বড় ম্যাচ জয়ের কীর্তি যার প্রথম গোলদাতা স্বনামধন্য রবি গাঙ্গুলি, প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে ডার্বির ইতিহাসে হ্যাট্রিককারী প্রথম দুজনই বাঙালী আর মোহনবাগান দলের যথাক্রমে অমিয় দেব (কানি) এবং অসিত গাঙ্গুলি, সাথে আরো কিছু গুপ্ত বা সুপ্ত ম্যাচের ফল সামনে আনা হয়েছে। আজ এরকমই একটা বড় ম্যাচের আলোচনায় আসব, যার হিসেব আজ অবধি আমাদের জানা কোন পরিসংখ্যানে ঠাঁই পায়নি, চাপা পড়েছিল কেবল পুরনো সংবাদপত্রের ছাপা অক্ষরে। 

ট্রেডস কাপ, ‘১৯৪৮। সেই ট্রেডস কাপ, যার ইতিহাস নতুন করে মোহনবাগান প্রেমীদের বলে দেবার কিছু নেই। একদা এই টুর্নামেন্টের গুরুত্বও যেমন ছিল, তেমনি মোহনবাগান সেই ১৯০৬-০৮ এই টুর্নামেন্ট জয়লাভের হ্যাট্রিক দিয়ে শুরু করে বহুবার সাফল্যের মুখ দেখেছে। যাই হোক, ২৩ শে জুলাই ১৯৪৮, অর্থাৎ ট্রেডস কাপের সূচী বা ফিক্সচার যেদিন যুগান্তর পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল, সেদিনই ভবিতব্য লেখা হয়ে গিয়েছিল যে দ্বিতীয় রাউন্ডেই দেখা হতে চলেছে চিরপ্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী দুই দলের। যথারীতি প্রথম রাউন্ডে মোহনবাগান সালকিয়া ফ্রেন্ডসকে আর ইস্টবেঙ্গল স্পোর্টিং ইউনিয়নকে হারিয়ে মুখোমুখি হল ট্রেডস কাপের দ্বিতীয় রাউন্ডের ম্যাচে।

 

৮ই আগস্ট ‘১৯৪৮, এক রবিবাসরীয় বিকেলে তদানীন্তন ময়দানের এজমালি মাঠ, তথা পুরনো মোহনবাগান মাঠে (অধুনা এরিয়ান মাঠে) অনুষ্ঠিত সেই ম্যাচে মোহনবাগান পরিষ্কার ২-০ গোলের ব্যবধানে ইস্টবেঙ্গলকে হারিয়ে ট্রেডস কাপের তৃতীয় রাউন্ডে চলে গিয়েছিল‌।

 
 
যদিও সেবার মোহনবাগান শেষ পর্যন্ত সেমিফাইনালে হেরে গিয়েছিল রবার্ট হাডসন ক্লাবের কাছে। মোহনবাগান মাঠে সেমিফাইনাল ম্যাচ প্রথম দিন সেমি গোলশূন্য ড্র থাকায় পরের দিনের রিপ্লে সেমিফাইনাল ম্যাচে মহামেডান স্পোর্টিং মাঠে মোহনবাগান এক গোলে হেরে যায়।

On 8th August, 1948, Sunday in a second round knock-out tie of Trades Cup, Mohun Bagan defeated arch rivals East Bengal by a clear margin of 2-0 to advance to the next round. The match was played at the erstwhile Mohun Bagan ground (today’s Aryans ground). Trades Cup, though being a very significant and popular name in the club’s history, as well as, Maidan, not much match details of this particular match could be retrieved amid the famous India’s gold medal clinching in hockey at the ’48 London Olympics. Thereafter, this has remained hidden and forgotten.
However, truth and reality will be revealed inevitably one day or the other. So, from next time onwards, when you discuss about the head-to-head tally between the two Kolkata giants, just make sure this match is counted. Do share this article to as many as mariners, across the globe, possible.

এখানে একটা বিষয় উল্লেখ করতে হয়, ডার্বি ম্যাচটার কোন পূর্ণাঙ্গ রিপোর্ট তো দূর, গোলদাতাদের নামও পাওয়া যায়নি। সংবাদপত্রগুলো জুড়ে স্বভাবতই ছিল সেই সময়ের চলতি ‘১৯৪৮ লন্ডন অলিম্পিক্স আসরে ভারতীয় হকি দলের স্বর্ণপদকলাভের গৌরবময় কাহিনী। অনুমান করা যায়, দুই প্রধানও তাদের সেরা সব ফুটবলারের সার্ভিস পায়নি অলিম্পিকের কারণে। উপরন্তু, উক্ত বড় ম্যাচের আগের দিনই কিনা মোহনবাগান হারিয়েছিল তখনকার আর এক শক্তিশালী দল এরিয়ান্সকে, সেটাও কিনা সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন একটি টুর্নামেন্টের ম্যাচে তথা উইলিয়াম ইয়ঙ্গার কাপে। বস্তুত, প্রদত্ত পেপার-কাটিংগুলোই চোখ রাখলেই দেখা যাচ্ছে যে সেই সময় একসাথে ট্রেডস কাপ, উইলিয়াম ইয়ঙ্গার কাপ, কোচবিহার কাপ, গ্রিফিথ শিল্ড, বেঙ্গল সকার লীগ সবই চলছে! অতএব, কোনভাবে এতকাল সম্পূর্ণ হারিয়ে গিয়েছিল বা বিস্মৃত হয়ে গেছিল এই ডার্বি জয়ের খবর।
 
আগামীদিনে আরো ডার্বি আসবে যাবে। জয়-পরাজয় হবে, হিসেবের গরমিল ওই তরফে করা হবে, তা ধরে ধরে সংশোধন করার প্রয়াসও জারি থাকবে, সাথে এই ধরনের বিস্মৃত হয়ে যাওয়া ম্যাচের রেজাল্টগুলো সংযোজন করার কাজ চলবে। আমাদের বিশ্বাস, আরো এরকম কিছু ম্যাচের হদিশ আগামী দিনে পাওয়া যাবে। কিন্তু এই ম্যাচগুলোর ফলাফল সকল ফুটবলপ্রেমীদের বিদিত করার কাজটাও আমাদের মিলেমিশে করতে হবে, সাথে বিশিষ্ট পরিসংখ্যানবিদদের গোচরে এনে ন্যায্য সরকারি স্বীকৃতি আদায় করতে হবে। তাই এই খবরের যত বেশি সম্ভব শেয়ার হোক। 

 

Durand Cup ‘2026: Both Kolkata giants in same group again

The ‘2026 Durand Cup will kick-off with the Kolkata Derby as 17 times (highest) champions Mohun Bagan SG takes on East Bengal FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata on July 25, Saturday.

The 135th edition of Asia’s oldest football tournament will see the participation of 24 teams divided into six groups playing across Kolkata, Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong and Guwahati from July 25 to August 23. After the group-stage, the six group toppers and two best runners-up will qualify for the quarterfinals. The matches will be broadcasted on Sony Liv.

Remembering Sailen Manna the great on his birth anniversary (1st Sept, 1924 to 27th Feb, 2012)

Sailendra Nath Manna, better known as Sailen Manna, left Howrah Union in 1942 to join Mohun Bagan Athletic Club and served for an impressive 19 odd years, retiring in 1960. He captained the team for six successive seasons from 1950 to 1955. Remarkably, he never accepted any remuneration from the club, choosing instead to rely solely on his salary from his office Geological Survey of India. It was under his captaincy, Mohun Bagan clinched the first Durand Cup title in 1953 the first Rovers Cup title in 1955. Mohun Bagan and Sailen Manna absolutely became synonymous.

Manna was a crucial member of the Indian Olympics football team thrice 1948, 1952 and 1956. Perhaps, he was skipper of the Indian team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Under Sailen Manna’s captaincy, India won the Gold Medal in the inaugural 1951 Asian Games at New Delhi. He was an indispensable member of the Indian side in 1954 Asian Games too. He was a tough but disciplined defender with great reputation of taking strong free-kicks as well.

In 1953, the England Football Association (FA) rated him among the 10 best skippers of the world in their yearbook. Manna was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971 by the Government of India. He was also awarded the “Footballer of the Millennium” by All India Football Federation (AIFF) in 2000. Sailen Manna was awarded the inaugural “Mohun Bagan Ratna”, the highest honour of the Mohun Bagan AC in 2001. The Drainage Canal Road in his hometown Howrah has been named as Sailen Manna Sarani of late, while the Howrah Maidan is now Sailen Manna Stadium recognising the immortal legend by the West Bengal Government.
