6th August: A memorable day for Bagan

Common people across the globe solemnly observe today as the Hiroshima Day. For the mariners, today’s date i.e. 6th August is very significant in terms of derby clash.

In 1937, on this date, Mohun Bagan clinched the then prestigious Raja Shield with thumping win over arch rivals East Bengal by a 4-0 margin. Asit Ganguly scored a brilliant hattrick, which was only the second feat after Amiyo Deb, also from Bagan. Again, on August 6th 1978, the Maidan saw one of  the most spectacular goals of all time scored by Shyam Thapa in the Calcutta Football League with his iconic back-volley helping Mohun Bagan seal the exciting ‘boro match’ again.

So, the same rivals were at the receiving end on both the occasions on the same date. For them, the pinch is no less than the infamous Hiroshima bombs. Now, let’s throw back to those unforgettable glories.

Mohun Bagan 4-0 BSF FC

On August 4, 2025 Mohun Bagan got past BSF FC by 4 goals to NIL in DURAND CUP 2025 Group Stage

Scorers were Manvir, Liston(2), Sahal.

While Bagan players had a 68% ball possession in the first half, they were able to score only 1 goal when Manvir Singh header from a Leewan cross got past the goalie. Anirudh Thapa missed couple of opportunities in handshaking distance, while Suhail and Liston wasted one each.

However things got changed in the second half.

Sub: Sahal, Alberto, Kiyan came in for Anirudh, Tom, Manvir.  Sahal took control of the midfield and his movements put BSF into defense. Later Abhishek replaced Roshan

Soon after, Liston scored twice and Sahal scored once to have the scoreline read  4-0.

However Dippendu was booked and will be missing the next game. It was a clear misjudgment from the referee though.

DHFC remains table topper in Group B with 8 goals difference and Mohun Bagan is at the second position with 6 goals difference.
